5 Single Portraits Evaluation

5 Single Portraits Evaluation

Below are my five single portraits that I shot for my Location Photography project.

What Went Well:

  • New Skill

Firstly mixed lighting was a new skill for me. It wasn’t something I was aware of, there we’re some instances where I took it for granted. For example when I was taking casual photos at my brothers wedding I was shooting with a speedlite at flash sync, this was an opportunity for mixed lighting which would’ve made my photos even better.

Not only has this course given me experience with the Elinchrom Quadras, it has also made me more aware of aspects like Inverse Square Law and reflections of light. Which are both things I’ve encountered when shooting but definitely known what they were or how to counter them.

Even though I’ve improved my ability with mixed lighting, I still feel I have more to learn of it.

  • Confidence to communicate

This project was all about going and asking people to take a picture of them. I couldn’t of done this project without permission. Three of my five taxi portraits we’re shot on the spot with permission. None of the driver knew I was coming until I asked them to take their picture. With the other two, they knew I was coming to do a shoot. This project has taken me out of my comfort zone.

  • Planning

dav

I really had to plan each shot to point where I could shoot in an instant. Do be able to get these shots I had to seem confident, especially for those who we’re asked on the spot. So I’d planned loads of different poses and lighting set ups to which the first shoot the driver gave me a time to shoot him. So that time I could try every pose. That way I could dispose of poses that didn’t work and I now knew what lighting set ups to go with for the other shoots so I could get the other taxi drivers shot quickly.

  • End Product

I’m very happy with the five portraits that I’ve come out with from this project. Some of the images are a bit darker than I wanted them to be, but I wasn’t only shooting with a new camera, I was also shooting with a new lighting technique [and a broken flash kit for most of the portraits] The portraits I feel are still mixed lighting and I feel work as a series.

Even Better If:

  • Time Managment

I feel I left this project very late to do. Not only did this lead to me feeling nervous about getting five portraits but it also meant I had to wait a while for my risk assessment to be approved, this only added to the stress of the project.

  • More Drivers

Mentioning back to the time management, if I had more time I would’ve shot even more taxi drivers. The flash kit was playing up on the day when I went to Suffolk Street so I didn’t really have a great choice of images to pick from.

  • Social Media Interaction

Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 20.33.29I was a bit downhearted about my social media appeal to find taxi drivers. My appeal on my Facebook didn’t get any responses and neither did my Instagram appeal. Even though I feel the social media attempt was a bit of a disaster it was the next phase where I messaged my friends actually led to my first taxi driver that let me shoot and test my shots.

Todays Taxi Shoot

Todays Taxi Shoot

Today I shot the rest of my taxi drivers. I was assisted by Molly Percy who’s dad is a taxi driver so we ended the day by taking pics of him. I felt that because I was showing the advantages fo taxi drivers, I felt I should get a wide range of experience and age. Below are the people that I shot for this project:

  • Barry: 18 Years Experience
  • John: 45 Years Experience
  • Gillian: 14 Years Experience
  • Colin: 45 Years Experience
  • George: 50 Years Experience
  • Jason: 24 Years Experience
  • Russell: 29 Years Experience

Image result for great suffolk street taxi cafeThe shoot went alright. I must admit we did have technical difficulties. It was very overcast, a storm was on the way so the sky was very dark. This meant there wasn’t very much ambient light in the centre. Apart from the taxi lights and a few fluorescent tubes at the petrol pumps. This wasn’t helped by us have a faulty flash kit. We didn’t know this during the shoot, but it seems that the flash seems to be out-of-sync after it’s been fired 4 or 5 times. It sounds to stupid to be true but below is a video of me and Molly testing it out. The power was on 4.0 and the image was black. It was’t the camera settings because the image only picked up the ambient light.

We tried different leads, different transmitters and even different cameras but it still happened.

I think these are the five images that I’m gonna upload for my Five Single Portraits submission:

Screen Shot 2018-05-29 at 18.58.29.pngMentioning back to the technical problems. It meant that I was gutted because I felt it would’ve been very good to include an image of a female taxi driver. However the flash didn’t fire in sync with the exposure. So sadly I can’t use it with the project.

It’s a shame because it’s definitely one of my favourite images from the shoot. However the flash can’t be seen, so it can’t be used. I’ve also decided to include an image of a young mechanic because I thought that I’m thinking too much about the taxi drivers who will be out of work, I should think about other people who will lose there jobs if black cabs disappear. So mechanic would, he’s probably been specially trained to fix black cabs. The staff at the cafe would also lose there job if driverless cars take over.

As a result there are one or two images that are a tad darker than I wanted them to be, but I feel I’ve done an good job

Location Photography Tutorial on the 24th of May

Location Photography Tutorial on the 24th of May

Image result for mack publishersThursday was the day for my latest tutorial for Location Photography. Celine started the by showing us a catalogue of books that MACK did. It was shown to make a point, which Celine said wasn’t valid for my idea because my book works with it. However Celine was showing us that not many photo-books are made in Landscape. In the Mack Publisher catalogue there was only one landscape book. Landscape is a very tough format to use, not only does it squash portrait images it’s very tough to use a Double page spread effectively thanks to it being turned into a panorama. This is something that was perfect for my photos but for other photos it isn’t good.

Screen Shot 2018-05-26 at 20.43.26.pngSo we started by looking at my updated photo-book layout. Celine liked the improvements I made to the trenches. There now grey rather than a harsh black and there only on the end paper where the intro and outro are. This way the images can talk for themselves. Celine believed that I need to pay more attention to type. My intro and outro originally had lines that stretched across the entire page. After some thought I’ve decided to change this to a 1/3 of the page. It’s just too tough to read a line that goes across an entire width of a page, especially for an A4 landscape book. Celine also said that I’ve clearly realised that smaller type is better than bigger type. Case in point the front cover. I had the name A World Beyond The War stretching across the cover. Now I’ve changed it to Font size 12 and it is now much easier to read and take in.

Next we spoke about my 5 single portraits. I showed Celine the 10 best images from my first taxi driver shoot. Celine and my peers really liked the image from inside the taxi. This was my favourite from the shoot. Celine commented that I’ve definitely used the mixed-lighting technique. I said to Celine now that I’ve shot the first one, I know what works and what doesn’t work as regards to poses and lighting. So now I can go to taxi drivers I don’t know and show and say with confidence what I want to create. Celine said have the images on your phone to show them what to do and send them the images. A final bit of feedback was that I should get the drivers to turn the taxi light on.

So now it’s a case of finding four more divers. To which on Tuesday. Me and Molly are gonna spend the day taking pics of taxi drivers. I’m probably gonna be able to get images of her dad in the morning, the I can probably get pics of his mate. Then we need two more, which we’re planning to go round several taxi cafes and garages across London, the more the merrier.

1st Taxi Driver Shoot

1st Taxi Driver Shoot

I’ve just done my first taxi driver shoot for my 5 Single Portraits. This shoot is definitely a starting point. Below are ten images that I very quickly picked out from Capture One.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So overall I feel this is a decent start. With some image I didn’t have the light in the correct position but now when I go onto the next taxi driver to shoot I know where to position the light. Also there a few images where I had to change the highlights slightly, so on the next shoot I should just take a tiny bit longer to find the perfect balance between ambient and flash.

If I we’re to pick five images based on poses, this is the five I’d select

Latest Location Photography Tutorial

Latest Location Photography Tutorial

Last Friday I had my latest tutorial for my location photography projects. We started the talk once again by starting with my photo-story.

Screen Shot 2018-05-19 at 17.39.07.pngCeline agreed with the layout of my book. It was felt that I had one of the few photo-books that works well in landscape. It really compliments the double-page spreads of the pivotal images. It really throws the focus onto why the images are pivotal, for example the two soldiers shaking hands.

Screen Shot 2018-05-19 at 17.38.52The next thing I posed was the trenches I drew to put into my book. I liked the idea but I had one problem with them. We’re they distracting. Which Celine said they are prominent but so are the images. Gemma felt that i should change the colour, I shouldn’t use such a harsh black. Gemma suggested using a grey, maybe a grey that appears in the image. Are much discussion we came to the conclusion that I shouldn’t include them on the pages because they we’re simply too distracting for the images. Celine however did think that I should use them on the end pages. Which is what I’m planning to do, subject to changing the colour.

This leads onto the next aspect of the tutorial. Typeface. Celine recommended that I keep type between a font size of 8-12. This is the size is comfortable for people to read. Any bigger and people will possibly lose focus when trying to read our book. Which this book isn’t text heavy like my fanzine but the intro and quotes are important for the narrative.

Screen Shot 2018-05-19 at 17.46.23.pngCeline recommended coming with an updated design to the next tutorial and then print it after that tutorial. I am however keeping my eyes on both Mixam and Blurb for how long it will take to produce and send. Mixam is currently listed as Tuesday the 29th for delivery which the following week has a bank holiday Monday so thats a further day. I might have to end up printing the tutorial.

Next week discussed five singles portraits. Once again there wasn’t really much to discuss about it. I hadn’t had the chance to shoot anything yet, I have one shoot lined up for Tuesday assuming that the CLR approve the risk assessment. On the Monday I’m gonna be assisting Tiana in her mixed lighting shoot. After that we might go on the hunt for taxi drivers on their breaks.

Social Media Appeal #2

Social Media Appeal #2

Today I did a second social media appeal for my Mixed lighting portrait project. This time I messaged some of my friends on Facebook.

In total I messaged 10 friends, which 2 of them still haven’t replied. Four responses pointed me in a good direction.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 16.26.431st my friends father said he has a taxi driver friend who will be available to shoot on Tuesday next week. The 2nd response was someone who has a taxi driver at work, unfortunately she won’t be seeing him until Wednesday next week. I’m still keeping that in my mind incase I can’t get five of them shot by Tuesday.

A 3rd friend replied back saying that he has a friend who would probably be available. However he lives out in Kent so I might not be able to get to him when he’s available.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 16.27.54A 4th friend reply and it initially looked positive. However her and her husband feel that he wouldn’t be willing to do the shoot. However she did suggest looking at taxi ranks or going to cafes where they meet up.

I decided to appeal this way because I was getting tired of contacting places and not hearing anything back. Feeling desperate I emailed London Corporate Cabs. A company that rents out taxis for photo-shoots and filming. I emailed them saying what be the possibility of getting five taxi-drivers for a photo-shoot about them. To which they simply replied giving me the rate which is £70/hour and it would only be one taxi driver.

So I’m now pleased to say that I have at least one person to shoot next week [assuming the CLR accepts my risk assessment] I could potentially have a fair few to shoot if I know the locations of there meeting points like cafes. Yes there are taxi ranks but there on call and most of them are unlikely to be willing to shoot.

Location Photography Tutorial

Yesterday I had a group tutorial for my location photography projects. We started by talking about my photo-story which I feel is in a really good place at the moment. I’ve near amount decided the images for my photo-story. Because I’m creating a story I already know Pivotalthe sequence of my images as-well. Maybe I might reshoot a couple of images but I don’t have to redo the entire story. So now I’m in the layout and design phase. Which layout of images I already know that I’m gonna have at least three double page spreads [maybe bleeds] as the three images above are the three pivotal images of the story, the start is the German surrendering, the climax is the soldier meeting and the end is explosion restarting the war. I was thinking of doing my book landscape which these images would look very good in a panoramic composition.

Image result for ww1 diaryNext we mentioned about the design. I said that I wanted the design to represent the time of WW1, to which Celine replied “I don’t see this as being a stark white photo-book … maybe the pages are a browny/yellow colour“. I did say that I was considering basing it off of a WW1 diary. This could be shown in the colour of the pages and the type, maybe I could use a lighter print stock. I do however think that a diary would be too small for these kind of images but I can definitely take inspiration and make it on a bigger scale.

The Grey Line

I thought about the idea of a diary because what I am doing is taking the role of a photographer documenting the soldiers in the Christmas truce, maybe I could scan in hand written captions. Even though it’s a different time period I could probably take inspiration from Tim Hetherington’s Modern Diary or Jo Metson Scott The Grey Line. Maybe I could replace them with quotes about the Christmas truce.

Next we discussed my portraits project, which I wouldn’t say I’m struggling but it’s at the other end of the scale compared to Photo-story.

Firstly I showed Celine the five images that I’m planning to shoot when I actually take some pictures of Taxi drivers. She recommended practicing the wind-mirror one before hand to see if I can balance the exposure properly. Celine also said it was good to see that I’d planned my shots before I got there but my subjects are most likely to be on short breaks so I’ll probably only get 5/10 minutes to shoot them.

Next we discussed about how to find taxi drivers, Celine recommended looking at Taxi clubs, cafes, garages etc. places where there most likely to meet up. I don’t essentially have to turn up with equipment. I could turn and ask if they’d be available to do a quick shoot one day.

Celine also mentioned Long Lane Cab Centre located on Southwark Bridge Rd. Celine felt I was in a good place and it was now just a case of finding the subjects and start shooting.

Social Media Appeal

Social Media Appeal

I’m starting to feel a tad bit nervous about my 5 Single Portraits. I’ve decided to narrow it down to Taxi drivers and now I just need to find five drivers. So I’ve taken to social media to try and find some taxi drivers that would be willing for the shoot.

Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 20.33.29.pngI did it on my Facebook page which was seen 37 people but got no interaction.

I tried Instagram which I got 18 likes but no comments.

However fellow student Molly Percy saw my post and sent me the following message.

Ben for u taxi project I know loads of taxi driver cus my dad is a taxi driver and he has taxi driver friends … Also he can tell u places to go where they all congregate such a cafes and garages and stuff

Now I’m feeling a tad bit more confident, I’ve booked out a Ranger for the first half of the Week commencing on the 21st of May. I’m aiming to shoot during that week.

Portrait Update

Portrait Update

Here is an update on my 5 Single Portaits project. I think I’m gonna try and narrow it down to taxi driver. I’m doing this for two reasons. Firstly I’m struggling to get replies for this project and taxi drivers are the one I’m most confident about. Secondly this is the job I’m most worried about losing in the future. The black cab is a staple of tourism in London and I would hate to see them get replaced by driverless cars. There knowledge of London’s back-streets, their famous conversations and their love of their motors is something that a robot can’t offer.

Below are the five shots I’m hoping to create when I actually get round to shooting some taxi-drivers. It has a mixture of interior and exterior shots all based around the taxi.
