Evaluation for Music Industry

Evaluation for Music Industry

What Went Well:

  • Shooting A Trio

This was my first time shooting a trio in the studio. Obviously photographing groups is very different from photographing an individual. I now have to do more directing and I have to give stronger consideration to how the image flows.

  • Use Of Photoshop

This was the first project where I’ve had to extend a background in Photoshop. This had to be done for all the images, mainly the CD book. Extending black was actually a lot tougher than I expected it to be.

  • My Talent

My band was very onboard for this project, as you would expect when you consider they have just formed so they are in need of imagery. They were also on board because of the message that the band was all about with them being about trying to end/control knife crime and youth violence in the capital.

  • Happy Client

The client was happy with the imagery that I’d created, I wish I could say the same

Even Better If:

  • The End Product

For the first week after the shoot I was feeling pretty happy with the results. However all of a sudden I no longer felt so happy with the images. They felt very repetitive and I definitely didn’t feel inspired by what I’d created. I don’t want to sound like I’m hunting for sympathy but I wasn’t myself during the shoot. It happened two days after my nans death so I wasn’t exactly going into the shoot wanting to create fantastic imagery. I just wanted to have fun to end a week where I had experienced nothing but loss and now as time has gone on. I’m starting to think that maybe I could’ve just put a bit more effort in.

Apart from one image, my lighting feels very dull and doesn’t really do anything to the image apart from light them.

  • Lens Choice

Another way that my images could’ve been better was my choice of lenses. I decided to go with the wide angle lens for my shots as I simply thought a wider lens would be better for photographing a trio. However, I think backfired this. As a result, the perspective doesn’t look right and in some of the shots the talent look like their uncomfortable which you don’t want in a portrait shoot. In hindsight, it probably would’ve been better if I took a step back and shot with the standard 80mm lens. This would’ve given my images a much nicer perspective.

  • Typography

One of the places where I could’ve put a lot more effort into was the writing on the clothes. No More was very important as it’s the name of the band and there are loads of shots where it isn’t as eligible as I would’ve liked it to be.

Does my CD image work?

Does my CD image work?

On the advice of Julian, I’ve decided to print the CD Book image and put it in a CD case so I can ask myself the question, does it work.

Screenshot 2019-06-02 at 16.17.41.pngLooking at the print, I’m wishing that the word No More on Sarah was straight because that is currently serving as the title of the image and it doesn’t seem that clear. I’m also not a fan of the skin tones but I need to remember that these have been printed on an ordinary printer so the colours aren’t going to look that good anyway.

Tutorial with Julian

Tutorial with Julian

Seeing on how I wasn’t able to have a tutorial with Chris Frazer-Smith this week due to me studying for POCP, I decided to have a tutorial with Julian Hawkins. This tutorial was just to run his eyes over my image selection for Images That Persuade.

So, firstly we looked at Music Industry. Julian agreed with my image choice for the CD front and back. They worked together and I extended the background to fit the left side of the frame.

Screenshot 2019-05-19 at 19.05.07.pngJulian agreed with what I said about the Facebook image I need to give the subjects more breathing room and I need to bring the word No More higher into the frame.

On the left is the Facebook image with the background extended further. The original is in the slideshow below.

Julian also recommended printing out the CD Inlay and actually putting it into a CD. This will let me know if the image works or not.

Next we looked at the leaderboard images for River Thames. Julian liked two of the images but felt there was one that shouldn’t be used and I agree with him. He wasn’t a fan of the one of the kayak on the celing. It was too abstract for his liking and he had to think about what it was.

I also have to remember that a leaderboard only appears online in the press and sometimes can only be around 7 cm’s wide so it would be squashed down too much. Whereas the silhouette image is perfect for that. It gives off a nice dynamic shape where you instantly know it’s rowing, Julian said it’s dynamic, it’s backlit nicely and it shows the action. It also shows how rowing can be an individual sport and then the final one shows how it’s also a team sport. Which I was worried that the logo would be too small but in Julian’s opinion it doesn’t matter as it still shows rowing.

So as a replacement, I’m considering using this image instead of the abstract kayak one. I feel it shows the team spirit.

Screenshot 2019-05-19 at 19.10.11.png

Screenshot 2019-05-19 at 19.14.34.pngFinally, we discussed my Billboard, which I’m putting most hope into, it is without a doubt my strongest assignment in ITP, but then again there isn’t really much competition from River Thames or Music Industry. After much debate and jumping backward and forewords, I came to a decision for my hero shot. It was different from the one I chose for the AoP awards. Julian liked it, he said that the side angle does the style the most justice. When Luke was shot straight on, the style could be perceived as contemporary. it could be a modern officer at the cenotaph.

However by shooting a profile. It does have that feel of the young British officer in the trenches of 1914 France and I wanted that to be there for the narrative of where the Poppy Legion started as the Haig Fund.

Screenshot 2019-05-19 at 19.15.19.pngI also asked Julian about a variant of the layout. Following on from POCP, I went back and masked the Poppy and leaf again, this time I used Auto Mask. I then inverted the mask and desaturated everything but the Poppy. It does feel like colour pop but Julian agreed with my thoughts of how this adds to the narrative of remembering those who have died.

However it detracted from the style as the Khaki tones were lost. Also the First World War is a very black and white subject and Julian feels it has to be brought into colour, like Peter Jacksons They Shall Not Grow Old. This makes it feel relatable.

A more honest view of my Music Industry shoot

A more honest view of my shoot

Screenshot 2019-02-23 at 12.42.57It’s now been two months since I did my music industry shoot and I feel I have now been able to truly reflect and answer the question of have I done a good job. I’ll admit I’m not feeling as upbeat about my shoot as I was when it finished.

I do admit I did have fun on the shoot but I feel I could’ve done a much better job.

I think one thing I’m really going to regret on this shoot is not having a stylist. Looking at the shots it’s starting to feel a tiny bit repetitive seeing the black shirts with No More written on them. I also feel a stylist would’ve been important because there are some shots where the writing bends around the body to the point where you can no longer read what it says and it becomes more of a distraction.

Screenshot 2019-02-23 at 13.34.39I also feel I made a bad choice with the lens. I shot everything on the 55mm lens and as a result, I’m not overly impressed with some of the poses which look a tad bit uncomfortable, which I think the wide angle perspective hasn’t helped at all. In hindsight, I should’ve gone further back with the camera and used the 80mm. There was also an image that I was intending to use for social media where I should have used the Cambo tripod, the three subjects are on the floor and I thought I could shoot it with the normal tripod and now these feel like snapshots and don’t really look that good.

There are also some images which could’ve done with the use of the overlay. There are some images which I’m putting into the layout and they just don’t work or compose like the way I expected them to. I didn’t use the overlay tool because I felt it wasn’t needed when you consider that the first mage would definitely need an extended background, the 2nd one was the same ratio as a Phase One sensor and there were two squares. I felt it wasn’t needed. I also thought that the FB one was the ration of a Phase One sensor but I was proven wrong.

So, as a result, there are some images where I have to do more extending of the background than I expected and extending black is actually a lot tougher than I anticipated.

So, overall, I’m no longer feeling that proud of the work I have created in the studio and I have a feeling it is definitely going to have an impact on my grade. I think that is going to be par for the course when you consider how my mind just hasn’t been on Ravensbourne during 2019.

An honest view of yesterday’s shoot

An honest view of yesterday’s shoot

Yesterday was the day of my long awaited Music Industry shoot. I think it’s fair, I just wanted the shoot to be done and dusted. My preparation was filled with lack of attention due to my Nans impending medical appointment, this was further hampered by a week-long intensive elective which hadn’t been properly organised. In the middle of this, my nan was diagnosed with Stage Four Live, Stomach and Lung Cancer. When this week arrived, I found out that one of my musicians couldn’t make it to the shoot, this was because I never gave him the date of the shoot because I wasn’t focusing on Ravensbourne. Then to act as one final hit, my Nan passed away on Wednesday. Only eight days after the diagnosis. Also one of the ELC 500’s I booked out had been damaged on the day previous.

So like I said, I just wanted to get this shoot done and dusted. I wanted it out of the way. I didn’t want to rearrange for another time, it would’ve been a logistical nightmare and I would’ve felt much better about myself if I carried on to do the shoot and then inform my tutors afterward.

Screenshot 2019-02-23 at 13.10.29.pngAll this meant that I went into the shoot with a different mindset. I wasn’t really going in there wanting to get a great grade, I just wanted to go into the studio and have fun, hopefully, create some images that my Nan would’ve been proud of, and I must admit, I believe this has made me feel much more happy about my work, as I’m not going into the studio saying to myself I have to do this, instead I went into the studio to have fun and go with the flow, essentially seeing where I was taken. If I get a good grade come June, it would be a bonus because I had a lot of fun in the studio yesterday.

It was also a pleasure to do my music industry shoot around No More UK which is a charity single that is all about working towards a safer London by giving a voice to young people who are affected by knife crime and violence in the capital.

An Update on my Musicians

An Update on my Musicians

This post is going to be an update on my musicians and I regret to say that the last two days have confirmed my worst fears. They have confirmed my worst fears that my nans diagnosis has indeed affected my workflow and my attention. This was confirmed when I messaged Hayden asking for him to confirm the names of the other two musicians who will be attending the shoot on Friday however Hayden thought the shoot was next week and that he is working this Friday.

I looked back through my messages and I confirm that I actually never gave him a date for the shoot and I really thought I did. He did say that he will speak to his boss and see if he could get the day off as he would’ve liked all three of them to be there for the shoot. He said he would do all he can to make it happen.

Today I found out that Lewis Neo [L.D.N Music] would definitely be available to attend and “maybe a couple of other people from No More UK” I asked Hayden if he knew if he could make it but he said “it isn’t looking good at the moment” I think it’s fair to say I was gutted when I got this message. I was on the verge of messaging Julian and asking for the shoot to be moved to either the second or third week of shooting because there are studio slots available. However, so much preparation has gone into this project that it would be pointless to postpone now. Also, there is no equipment available on other days so my shoot won’t be to the best of my abilities if I don’t do it this Friday.

Update for Music Industry [MUA & Digi Op]

Update for Music Industry [MUA & Digi Op]

In this post I will be giving a brief update to the crew for my music industry shoot.

Digi Op

Screenshot 2019-02-18 at 15.16.13.pngFirstly I’ve got a new digi op. Before sign off, I tried to contact Matt Vale. I messaged him twice on Facebook and once on Aula. To which he saw the first message but I never got a response to any of them. I mentioned to Julian that I hadn’t heard back and he said I was to let him know by the end of the day on the 8th if I hadn’t heard anything. After my sign off, I saw a friend of Matt and asked if he was about and she said that he had only been in for two days since Christmas, to which I went straight to Julian and told him.

Screenshot 2019-02-18 at 15.20.33I’ve now got a new Digi Op, Alisha Vatel, I’ve sent her a message on Aula and an email to break the ice, asking if she needs to know anything before the shoot on Friday. I must admit I thought this would’ve been sorted sooner than it had.

MUA

Screenshot 2019-02-18 at 15.22.55.pngI’ve reached out to a minimal makeup artist who unfortunately isn’t available, I asked if she knew anyone else who would be happy to help but she didn’t. I’m still on the hunt for one.

Lighting Diagrams for Music Industry Shoot

Lighting Diagrams for Music Industry Shoot

Below are my lighting diagrams for the shoot I’m doing on Friday, I have passed them onto my assistant Lucille.

Screenshot 2019-02-04 at 00.21.16I’ve also included a lighting diagram for the shallow depth of field portraits which won’t be part of the project but will be sent to the musicians for there own use, along with everything I shoot for the project.

Image One: CD Book Front

1. Music Industry Image One Lighting Diagram .jpgThe first and second image are going to be near-amount the same in a compositional sense, with slightly different lighting setups. For this one the key light is going to be an Octa 100 from a high angle above myself, I’m hoping for this to only light the subject at the front, hence the two poly boards either side.

The two subjects on either side will have one light for them as well [60×80 W/Grid & 90×110 W/Grid] hopefully in a Rembrandt style lighting, these will be flagged off by polyboards. The final light will be a rim light on the subject in the middle with a bare-head ELC 500.

Image Two: CD Inlay Back

2. Music Industry Image Two Lighting Diagram .jpgThe composition of this image is the same as the last but the poses are inverted. The subject in the middle now has his back to the camera and is looking over his shoulder at the camera, the two subjects on either side are looking straight at the camera with there backs to each other.

Once again the key will be the Octa 100 however I would like the light to spread over the three subjects so I’ve ditched the polyboards. I would also like to lights on either side of the other two subjects to give them structure and definition [60×80 W/Grid & 90×110 W/Grid] I’m not sure yet but I might flag those two lights off of the subject at the front. These two subjects could have split lighting. I will once again have a barehead 500 to provide rim light.

Image Three: Facebook

3. Music Industry Image Three Lighting Diagram .jpgFor the image for Facebook I was thinking about having the three subjects kneeling behind one of there shirts which will be on a black polyboard which will have one of there shirts on it. Key light will be the 60 x 80 W/Grid from a high angle on the right. A 90 x 110 W/Grid will come over the left from a high angle and there will be two barehead 500 on the floor to provide rim light. There will be a white polyboard on either side.

Image Four: Instagram

4. Music Industry Image Four Lighting DiagramFor the image for Instagram I was thinking about having the three subjects lying on the floor to form a triangle. All three would have there own light. I was thinking about a barehead 500 right on the floor to maybe lift one of the subjects from the ground but I’m not sure if that would work.

Image Five: iTunes

Image result for The Enemy album coverFinally for the iTunes image, I was thinking of having something very similar to the Enemy. I’m not a fan of the gel, but I really like the split lighting.

I, however, think I would do two at the front and one at the back, just for something a bit different. I’m mainly inspiration from the poses and compositions rather than lighting

5. Music Industry Image Five Lighting Diagram .jpgI would go with an Octa 100 as my key light on the right, maybe lighting all three of them, then the subject on the left would have filler on the left and the subject on the right would have a light over his shoulder to add definition.

Image Six: Shallow Depth Of Field Portraits [Miscellaneous]

6. Music Industry Image Six Lighting Diagram .jpgThis is the lighting diagrams for the shallow depth of field portraits I will shoot for the musicians on an individual basis. You can see the result of the diagram at the top in the portrait of Tiana.

The key light will be a 60×80 W/Grid on the right [1.8] there will be a second light coming over the left to add definition [1.0] then there will be a 500 with a black brolly on the background [3.0] might have yet another one the other side to make the light even. I think this would be shot on either a Phase One 110 or 150mm lens as I shot the Tiana image with my Canon 70-200.

The estimate for Music Industry

The Estimate for Music Industry

Screenshot 2019-02-07 at 20.27.04.pngThis is the estimate that I am going to submit for my Music Industry shoot tomorrow. Getting to this quote was a bit of a struggle. I was trying very hard to find equipment in the same place but I initially couldn’t find a middle ground.

Flash Centre didn’t have Phase One Lenses

Teamwork only had Phase One

Direct Digital didn’t do Elinchrom [new equipment] they didn’t do Colorama

Gripvan didn’t have much equipment and not everything was priced

However, I found a form on the Flash Centre which did have all the equipment that I needed. You can find it highlight below.
